How Brittany Mahomes convinced a city to back a $185 million stadium expansion and why it’s changing wome

Kansas City just made one of the most significant public commitments to women’s sports in American history. On September 10, 2026, the city council approved up to $185 million in financing to expand CPKC Stadium from 11,500 to 18,000 seats, anchoring a wider $1.4 billion Berkley Riverfront development.
The Kansas City Current, co-founded by Brittany Mahomes alongside Angie and Chris Long in 2020, sits at the center of it all. This did not happen because a billionaire lobbied hard for a handout. It happened because the numbers earned the trust.
This is not the city writing a blank check. The approved ordinance authorizes debt financing of up to $185 million, with a critical condition attached: the Current’s ownership group must guarantee any cash flow shortfalls.
An independent financial feasibility study is also required before a dollar moves. Mayor Quinton Lucas, who sponsored the ordinance, was clear on this point. The club carries the downside risk, not the taxpayer in the traditional sense. THE TIMES OF INDIA
