Not Just for Muscles — Creatine May Sharpen Memory & Mental Speed
April 10, 2026
A growing body of research suggests that creatine—commonly known as a muscle‑building supplement—may also sharpen memory and mental speed. A recent systematic review and meta‑analysis of randomized trials found that creatine monohydrate significantly improved several aspects of cognitive performance in adults.
-
Memory: Participants showed about a 14% improvement in recall and learning ability, especially in tasks that require more cognitive control.
-
Processing speed: Thinking and reaction times were roughly 19% faster, indicating quicker mental processing.
-
Attention: Focus and sustained concentration increased by around 13%, helping people stay on task longer.
The cognitive gains were most pronounced in adults aged 18–60, women, and individuals with existing health conditions, and benefits appeared with both short‑term (under four weeks) and longer supplementation. The effects are thought to come from creatine’s role in boosting brain energy (ATP) and acting as a neuromodulator that supports synaptic plasticity and neurotransmission. MBG
