Smaller balls for women’s rugby ‘worst decision ever’

May 6, 2026

England fly-half Zoe Harrison has strongly criticized World Rugby’s decision to introduce smaller size 4.5 balls for the upcoming WXV Global Series in September and October. The balls are about 3% smaller than the standard size five but weigh the same, following trials with elite women’s Sevens players last November.

Harrison called it “the worst decision someone has ever made,” noting she hasn’t kicked anything smaller than a size five since age 14 and that the reduced surface area affects foot placement. Despite her current success in the Women’s Six Nations—converting all 15 goal attempts—she only learned of the trial through reporters.

England’s Red Roses will use the new balls against Canada (last year’s World Cup final opponents, whom they beat 33-13), Australia, and New Zealand in the tournament. BBC
