Katie Schide highlights successful UTMB campaign for CTS athletes
August 31, 2022
17 CTS Athletes, working with 6 different CTS Coaches, competed in UTMB events in Chamonix.
(Colorado Springs, CO – August 31, 2022) / SPORTSWIRE WOMEN/ – Seventeen CTS Athletes competed in the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB®) events held in Chamonix, France between August 22 – 28, 2022, with Katie Schide scoring a runaway victory in ultramarathon’s premier 171-kilometer event. As a testament to the depth of the CTS Ultrarunning Coaching Staff, six coaches had athletes competing in UTMB events, and CTS had multiple coaches on site to support athletes throughout the week.
Katie Schide – 2022 UTMB Champion
Katie Schide led the UTMB race early on, before relinquishing the lead and falling 40 minutes behind. Coming back from such a deficit is rare, but the North Face-sponsored athlete continued to work the problem and adapt to the adversity. She gradually gained ground and eventually retook the lead and went on to win by more than one hour.
Katie started working with Jason Koop, Head Coach of CTS Ultrarunning and author of “Training Essentials for Ultrarunning, 3rd Ed.” in December 2021. A winner of several UTMB World Series® races, her best previous finishes in UTMB were 6th place in 2019 and 8th place in 2021. To achieve greater adaptations within the same weekly training hours, Coach Koop implemented block training to concentrate training stimulus. Katie also competed in ski mountaineering (skimo) for high-intensity training through the winter.
“As her coach, I’m overjoyed for Katie, but not just because she prevailed,” said Jason Koop. “The backstory is as special for me as the victory. It’s a story of the transformation she made to her training over the past year, the way she adapted to adversity, and the way she executed on race day.” Read Coach Jason Koop’s race report.
