Tonal’s 2025 State of Strength Report Reveals Shorter Workouts, Smarter Training, and a Major Shift Toward Longevity

December 4, 2025

Tonal, the pioneer of the world’s smartest strength training system and home to the largest strength dataset in the world, today released its 2025 State of Strength Report, revealing how fitness trends are shifting toward shorter, smarter, and more personalized routines that support long-term health. Drawing on data from 32,000* members and survey responses from 700 participants, the report highlights the most significant shifts in how Americans train, recover, and stay healthy.

The findings show a clear move away from long, high-intensity sessions and toward shorter, smarter, more personalized routines. Most notably, Boomers are the most consistent exercisers on Tonal, training 37 percent more than Gen Z and matching their strength and power gains.

“This year’s data shows a clear shift where consistency and smart programming are outperforming volume, and members are seeing meaningful results through shorter and smarter programming,” said Darren MacDonald, CEO of Tonal. “With the most advanced strength dataset in the world, we’re focused on shaping the future of training through adaptive guidance, mobility work, and hybrid options, giving people the tools to train smarter and integrate fitness seamlessly into their lives.”

Four Major Shifts Shaping the Next Era of Fitness

  • Shorter Sessions beating longer workouts. The “no pain, no gain” mindset is fading. Tonal member behavior points to a new reality.

    • More than half of members now train for 31 to 45 minutes instead of 45 to 60 minutes. 90% say they have built more strength in less time.

    • For those who previously cited time constraints, the shift is dramatic: 70% now train three to five times per week and 19% work out daily.

  • Strength and power are becoming the strategy for longevity. Strength is no longer just about looks, it’s about independence, mobility, and lasting energy.

    • 80% of members report training to age better. More than 75% of members over 40 say they feel more physically capable since starting on Tonal.

    • Older members are leading from the front with Boomers averaging 11 workouts per month, 37% more than Gen Z. They also achieve major gains in key movements, including a 25% increase in deadlift strength and 22% increase in bench press strength.

  • Personalization is replacing one-size-fits-all programs. Tonal’s adaptive system replaces one-size-fits-all programs with real-time weight adjustments, evolving training plans, and weekly targets tailored to each member’s body, pace, and potential.

    • Members who interact with their weekly targets are far more likely to follow through. They hit their goals 90% of the time, compared to 72% for members with lower engagement.

    • The trust in adaptive training is high. 90% of members accept Tonal’s weight recommendations across millions of sets. 71% say they lift more with adaptive weights than they would on their own.

  • Hybrid training is becoming the default. Strength is still the number one mode on Tonal, but members are blending modalities for smarter workouts.

    • Women are driving the shift. Since 2021 they are doing:

      • 3x more Pilates

      • 2.8x more mobility work

      • 2.4x more meditation

    • Men are increasing mobility work as well, up 44% since 2021.

    • Variety is paying off. Women saw an average 15% gain in both deadlift and bench press strength and 30% of members report that their training has more variety since joining Tonal. yahoo!
