Women’s flag football sparks euphoria in US

April 30, 2025

From parks to tournaments across the United States, a silent sporting revolution has begun to take shape with girls and teenagers getting involved on the pitch without physical contact, driven by a dream that no longer seems unattainable: to be part of the Olympic flag football team in Los Angeles.

This sport, a non-tackle variant of traditional American football, has gone from being almost invisible just six years ago to becoming the fastest-growing discipline among young American women. Its meteoric rise is not only due to its dynamic and safe format but also to the push it has received from a powerful machine: the NFL. Since 2024, more than 270,000 girls aged six to 17 have been practicing the discipline across the country, supported by school programmes, tournaments organised by the professional league, and the promise that a university scholarship, and even a sports career, is now within their reach.
