Tennis Champion and Entrepreneur Maria Sharapova Invests in Investing Platform Public.com

December 6, 2021

NEW YORK– Public.com, the investing platform that helps people become better investors, today announced that tennis champion and entrepreneur Maria Sharapova has made an investment in the company to help level the investing playing field for everyone, especially young women, and empower and bring more women into the public markets for the first time.

By partnering with Public, Sharapova is committed to making investing more accessible and approachable, especially for young women. As an active member of Public’s community (@mariasharapova), she looks forward to sharing insights about her investing and entrepreneurial journey with the app’s 1 million+ members, which includes 40% women, 45% people of color, and 90% first-time investors.

On December 8, Maria will join a special edition of Public.com’s in-app live audio broadcast, Public Live, for an in-depth conversation about her journey from teenage tennis champion and World No. 1 to active founder, CEO and investor. Through the partnership, she will also serve as an advisor to Public’s recently-launched program for NCAA student-athletes, One Team, which brings financial literacy tools and training to student-athletes following the NIL policy changes announced earlier this summer.

“After winning my first Grand Slam at 17 years old, I was introduced to the business world at a young age with new brand deals and business opportunities,” said Sharapova. “It can be a very intimidating environment and one that I had to learn to navigate as just a teenager. I really appreciate how Public helps break down the category into simple, educational, user-friendly steps to make investing less intimidating and help users take control of their finances more confidently.”

Sharapova’s experience in the business world is prolific and continues to expand, from being the sole teenager at the table for deals with major brands and founding her own company, to continuing to build her business portfolio as an investor and strategic advisor to a variety of companies.

“We’re so excited to welcome Maria as an investor, long-term partner, and advisor to Public,” said Public.com co-CEO Leif Abraham. “Together, we look forward to helping more people enter the public markets and become better investors. We’re lucky to have Maria’s expertise as not only a tennis legend and pro athlete, but also an experienced entrepreneur, investor, and advocate for women’s financial empowerment.”
